The University of North Dakota (UND) has been classified as an R1 institution by the Carnegie Foundation, according to President Armacost and Scott Snyder, vice president for Research & Economic Development. This classification is awarded to universities with "very high research activity," which means they have annual research expenditures exceeding $50 million and award at least 70 doctorates each year.
President Armacost and VP Snyder discussed this achievement in a special edition of the president's video series. Snyder noted that UND surpassed these thresholds in recent years. For 2023, the year assessed by the Carnegie Foundation, UND reported $182 million in research expenditures and graduated 105 doctoral students.
Snyder emphasized that this milestone provides more than just recognition; it paves the way for increased collaborations, additional funding opportunities, and enhances UND's credibility in recruiting faculty, staff, and students.
When asked by Armacost about what it takes to achieve R1 status beyond meeting numerical benchmarks, Snyder attributed it to dedication, creativity, innovation, and a commitment to discovery—a core component of the UND LEADS Strategic Plan.
