In a recent video message, President Andrew Armacost and Art Malloy, Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of North Dakota (UND), discussed upcoming events planned to celebrate Black History Month. The conversation highlighted various activities that will take place throughout February.

Art Malloy noted the significance of this year's celebration as it marks the 99th year since Black History Month was first observed. He emphasized that it is an opportunity to learn about the Black experience in the United States and recognize historical coalitions that have enabled Black Americans to participate fully in American democracy.

President Armacost inquired about the Hilyard Center on campus, named after James Hilyard Duty, UND’s first student of color. He also asked what events are planned for the rest of February.

On Thursday, February 20, the Hilyard Center will kick off its Rosa Park Series by hosting painter Evan Struck at the Memorial Union. Struck will create a painting of a famous historical figure within 60 minutes.

The following day, Friday, February 21, UND will host pilot Kenyatta Ruffin for a fireside chat at the Memorial Union. Ruffin is recognized as a United Airlines captain, former F-16 fighter pilot, and former White House Fellow. Malloy described Ruffin as a “rockstar.” Robert Kraus, Dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, will join Ruffin in this discussion.
