President Andrew Armacost recently hosted a video discussion focused on the University of North Dakota's efforts in STEM education. Joining him were Ryan Adams, dean of the College of Engineering & Mines, and Brad Rundquist, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. The conversation highlighted UND’s ongoing commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics training.

A major topic was the upcoming construction of a new STEM Complex on the site previously occupied by the Hyslop Sports Center. Both deans discussed how this facility is expected to enhance research opportunities, encourage collaboration between different departments, and help address workforce needs in North Dakota.

Armacost reflected on the recent groundbreaking event held during Homecoming Week. He expressed appreciation for donors, legislators, and others who have contributed to making the two-phase project possible. "The STEM Complex, once completed, will be a mainstay and a 'powerhouse' for UND," Armacost said. Further details about the project are available on UND’s website.

Adams and Rundquist described the planned building as having “world-class” potential to unite students from various disciplines and teach skills such as collaboration and communication that are important for their future careers.

UND has been actively working to address workforce shortages in North Dakota by strengthening its STEM programs and offering online education options that keep local residents engaged while attracting attention from outside the state. New facilities like the STEM Complex and proposed Health Professions Collaborative Facility are expected to play key roles in preparing students for essential jobs in labs, classrooms, and even remote environments such as the Alaskan Arctic.
