Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota is set to offer two new degrees from the fall of 2025. These will be in biomedical science and environmental science, as stated by the university's Department of Science.
The biomedical science degree aims to combine elements of biology, chemistry, exercise science, and psychology. It is crafted to prepare students for further academic pursuits in healthcare. According to Bryan Schmidt, chair of the Department of Science, “I’m very excited to see this program started. This degree was intentionally designed to not only help students get into graduate or professional school but to succeed in those advanced programs and beyond in a biomedical profession.”
Students will find the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science program geared towards modern medicine's essential sciences. It offers specific tracks for various healthcare fields such as primary healthcare (including pre-medicine and pre-dentistry), allied health (including pre-chiropractic and pre-physical therapy), and research roles. Nigel George, an associate professor at Minot State, states, “Minot State University's new biomedical science program is the ideal preparation for students with a passion to contribute to the health and well-being of others.”
In the environmental science degree, students will explore biology, chemistry, and geoscience together. There are three specialized tracks: conservation, earth systems science, and environmental health. Joseph Pettit, an assistant professor at Minot State, highlighted, “The environmental science program is an interdisciplinary way to learn the biology, geology, and chemistry of the environment around us.”
Both programs are intended to give students practical skills for the job market, with potential employment opportunities in organizations like the US Fish and Wildlife Service or the US Geological Survey.
Further information about the biomedical science and environmental science degrees can be accessed by contacting Bryan Schmidt or Joseph Pettit, respectively.
