Fred Strand, an associate professor of mathematics and distinguished alumnus of Mayville State University (MSU), is set to retire this spring. Strand's career has been defined by decades of dedication to education, both at MSU and in the K-12 system. As he leaves, the campus, undergoing significant renovations, is poised to enter a new chapter.
The renovation of Old Main, a building rich in the memories of the Strand family, holds symbolic significance for Fred and his relatives. Undergoing upgrades, the structure represents continuity and adaptation. "Being on campus and watching the work on the Old Main renovation sends a message that Mayville is here to stay," Fred commented. His extended family's connection to MSU stretches over a century, evidenced by multiple generations graduating from the institution.
Fred and his wife Donalee, also an alumna, both began their careers in nearby Hatton, N.D., after completing their studies at MSU. Their four sons each returned to MSU, maintaining the family tradition. Donalee recalls a speech class under a professor who was not easily swayed by theatrical flair. This, among other recollections, ties the Strand family deeply to Old Main's history.
Fred's eldest son, Derrick, returned to MSU later in life to complete his degree. His wife, Cydnee, advanced from teaching to become a principal, despite her lack of initial familial ties to MSU. Their son, Anthony, ventured into education and libraries, with his artistic pursuits at MSU supplementing his formal studies.
As Old Main is revitalized, enhancements aim to facilitate modern educational needs while preserving the building's charm. "The front of Old Main will be the same, with a classic look, but the inside will be more fitting for what the needs are now," noted Donalee.
Fred remains optimistic about MSU's future and believes in its capacity to offer transformative educational experiences similar to those he and his family enjoyed. "There was connection at MSU long before I was there," Fred reflected, acknowledging the university's enduring legacy.
