The University of North Dakota (UND) has experienced significant changes over the past decade, according to a recent message from President Andy Armacost. In his reflection, Armacost addressed the UND community, emphasizing that while record enrollment numbers are notable, the focus should be on the opportunities and value provided to students.
"Our impressive enrollment numbers are a mere byproduct of the hard work and commitment we have shown to our students," Armacost stated. He noted that after reaching a peak in 2012, UND's enrollment dropped by 11% leading into the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since then, student numbers have increased steadily, with unprecedented growth reported in recent years.
Armacost highlighted that the university's first-year class is now its largest ever. From 2023 through 2024, this group grew by 25%, followed by another 15% increase heading into 2025. UND currently attracts more undergraduate students from North Dakota than any other institution in the state.
He attributed these achievements to decisions made during challenging times. "When the state enacted dramatic budget reductions in 2015 and 2016, UND made tough choices about expenditures, staffing and programs. We had no alternative than to make the tough calls, but it laid a foundation for the great success that would follow," Armacost said.
The university also invested in its physical infrastructure by removing outdated facilities and modernizing campus spaces with support from donors and legislators. These efforts were accomplished with consideration for taxpayer costs.
Research funding at UND has grown significantly as well. Over the past decade, annual research funding increased from $65 million to nearly $200 million. This growth is credited to faculty members advancing research across various fields.
Armacost thanked those who contributed to these developments: "Many of you have lived this history and have been central to our campus’s current success. For that, I say thank you, and let’s keep it going."
A series of stories published alongside Armacost's message provide further details on UND's transformation over time. The package includes accounts of how strategic planning helped modernize campus facilities and build a new brand identity for UND.
