Genevieve Kahrilas, an enthusiastic and innovative chemistry professor, offers insights into her academic journey and personal interests. Raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, her interests spanned math, science, and music. Though initially drawn to music, her focus shifted after her college experience with organic chemistry.

"I grew up in a small suburb of Chicago called Park Ridge, Illinois. I was always interested in math and science as a kid, but I was also very much into music," Kahrilas shared.

Music remained a significant part of her life, but after a knee injury in high school, she turned her attention to science, particularly after being inspired by a high school physics teacher. She eventually pursued science as a career, although initially despising chemistry. Her attitude changed when she encountered organic chemistry at Northwestern University, leading to a newfound appreciation for the subject.

Despite a non-linear path to academia, Kahrilas became a method development chemist and later joined Minot State University as a chemistry professor. Recalling her first teaching experience, she noted, "One word: overwhelmed."

Kahrilas is committed to making chemistry accessible to all students, emphasizing visual aids and demonstrations in her teaching. "I try to light a fire or five in every chem class that I teach and show students how chemistry is everything that you can see, feel, or hear," she explained.

Her research includes studying silver nanoparticles and conducting chemical analyses, which she relishes. The research ties into her work in the Medicinal Plant Chemistry program at Minot State, which analyzes substances such as "THC alternative" products. Kahrilas encourages students to keep an open mind about their career paths: "It’s never too late to switch fields or your career path."

Beyond academia, Kahrilas actively participates in music, performing with the Minot Symphony Orchestra, reflecting her belief in maintaining hobbies along with professional responsibilities. "Remember to keep your hobbies and passions as you move through life," she advised.

Minot State University, where Kahrilas currently teaches, is dedicated to education, scholarship, and community engagement, providing students with active learning experiences and a vibrant campus life.
