The University of North Dakota's Center for Rural Health (CRH) has appointed Jacob Warren as its new director, succeeding Acting Director Brad Gibbens. Warren, who hails from Georgia, brings extensive experience in rural health policy and research to the role after a national search led him to North Dakota. Previously, he served at the College of Health Sciences at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.

In an interview with For Your Health, a newsletter of the School of Medicine & Health Sciences, Warren expressed his admiration for UND’s CRH. "UND’s Center for Rural Health is unmatched across the U.S.," he stated. He noted that working with the team responsible for maintaining this standard was a significant factor in his decision to accept the position.

The CRH serves as North Dakota's State Office of Rural Health and is integral to both state and national health affairs through initiatives like the Medicare Rural Hospital Flexibility Grant Program and the Area Health Education Center Program. These programs aim to stabilize rural healthcare infrastructure and expand the healthcare workforce.

Warren highlighted that UND's long-standing commitment to addressing rural health needs has fostered a unique environment focused on improving health outcomes in rural areas. "I’m not aware of any other state that has the types of relationships that exist within CRH," he said, underscoring how these connections support critical access hospitals and clinics throughout North Dakota.

Regarding his research focus, Warren emphasized community-engaged approaches where rural communities play an active role in identifying their health needs and solutions. His work also concentrates on addressing health inequities in rural areas by developing targeted programs.

On policy matters, Warren has concentrated on reducing infant and maternal mortality rates in rural regions. He co-chairs the federal Advisory Committee on Infant and Maternal Mortality's rural health subcommittee and participates in various state advisory boards dedicated to improving maternal and infant health outcomes.

Warren acknowledged UND’s reputation extends beyond its academic contributions; it is known for its challenging weather conditions as well. Having lived in different states with varying climates, he feels somewhat prepared for Grand Forks' cold temperatures but remains open to adapting further.
