The Northwest Arts Center is hosting a solo exhibition titled "Grand Entry" by Linda Whitney, an acclaimed artist and printmaker. This exhibition, running from April 2 to April 25, features mezzotint prints that delve into indigenous culture and traditional dance.

Whitney's passion for Native American culture began in her childhood and was further influenced by her late husband, a traditional powwow dancer. Her work aims to honor the rich history of indigenous peoples. “The celebration of the Powwow is a declaration of the strength and tenacity of the indigenous cultures of this continent,” Whitney explains. She emphasizes that the vibrant regalia represents both history and creativity.

Her mezzotints are created using hand-rocked copper plates with pigments sourced from nature, a meticulous process that allows for reflection on cultural history. “It gives me time for reflection. Each part of the process is hopefully honoring and respecting the long history of the indigenous culture,” she notes.

Rather than creating portraits, Whitney seeks to capture the movement and beauty of powwow dancers through her art as a tribute to her late husband and adopted grandmother. A professor emeritus who describes herself as living in her studio, Whitney has showcased her work in over 400 exhibitions worldwide.

A closing reception will be held on April 25 from 6:30-8 p.m., including an online viewing option via Facebook Live where Whitney will give a virtual talk at 7 p.m. The exhibition also features lithographs by Fritz Scholder from Minot State University's Permanent Collection.

The Northwest Arts Center is located at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. It operates as a non-profit arts center offering year-round exhibitions and events free to the public. The center receives support from various grants including one from the North Dakota Council on the Arts.
