The University of North Dakota (UND) is showcasing its progress on the “Discovery” core value as part of its LEADS Strategic Plan. The special edition of UND Today, scheduled for release on the last Tuesday of each month, highlights advancements in fulfilling this plan. The upcoming issue will focus on “Service.”
Nikola Datzov, Kyle Foerster, and Devon Olson introduce this special edition. They emphasize the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing problem-solving across various domains by processing vast data efficiently.
“Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have entirely changed ‘the world around us’ and forced our spirit of inquiry to work overtime,” they state.
UND has been a key player in AI research and discussions nationally. The School of Law, Artificial Intelligence Research Center, and the School of Medicine & Health Sciences Library are leading voices on campus.
The School of Law has addressed numerous legal questions arising from AI’s integration into society. Faculty members are considered thought leaders in adapting legal education to incorporate AI topics. Students can engage with these subjects through courses like “AI & the Law.”
At the Artificial Intelligence Research Center, efforts focus on developing cutting-edge AI software and hardware systems that enhance human experiences. Researchers participate in projects funded by federal agencies such as NASA and the Department of Defense.
Meanwhile, at SMHS Library Resources, discovery aims to improve health outcomes for North Dakotans. Adapting to shifts in healthcare education over recent years has positioned them well for integrating AI into their curricula.
“As ChatGPT took over the news cycle in 2023,” Olson notes that SMHS students were already examining algorithm impacts through librarian-facilitated coursework.
These collaborative initiatives across disciplines underscore UND’s commitment to fostering discovery within its academic community.
