The University of North Dakota is hosting a Military History Display in the Memorial Union Gallery through Friday, September 26. The exhibit features helmets, uniforms, flags, and historic photographs to commemorate 142 years of military history at the university.

Angie Carpenter, director of Veteran & Military Affairs at UND, said that military instruction has been part of the university since its founding. “In the original ‘Act for Establishing a Territorial University at Grand Forks, North Dakota,’ passed by the Territorial Legislature in 1883, military instruction was required of all male students. Col. Homer B. Sprague, a former Union Army officer, served as the second president of UND, and the University’s current Army ROTC Battalion traces its origins to his tenure.”

The display includes items from several sources: many are typically kept in the UND Armory with the Army and Air Force ROTC units; others have been provided by UND’s Veteran & Military Affairs Office, Hilyard Center, Chester Fritz Library, local civic groups in Grand Forks, and individual veterans and servicemembers.

Carpenter stated that “the display is meant to honor that proud legacy.” The exhibit aims to recognize students, graduates, faculty, and staff who have served during both wartime and peacetime throughout UND’s history.
