Patricia Dennis, a 1995 graduate of Minot State University, has carved a successful career in leadership, currently serving as CEO and board director of Fulcrum Health, Inc. Her journey to this role is rooted in her experiences as a non-traditional student at the university.
Dennis's early life in Sturgis, South Dakota, shaped her values in service and education, influenced by her parents' professions as a teacher and an occupational therapist. This foundation led her to pursue interests in healthcare and leadership. Team sports like softball and volleyball played a significant role in developing her leadership skills. "Sports taught me essential leadership skills, teamwork, and how to adapt to different situations — qualities that have been invaluable throughout my career," she shared.
After moving to Minot for her husband's job, Dennis enrolled at Minot State at age 33 with the support of her husband Chuck. She chose business administration due to its broad applicability across industries. "As a non-traditional student, I had a deep appreciation for the experience and valued the diversity of perspectives," Dennis said.
Her academic achievements include graduating summa cum laude and being named Business Student of the Year for 1994–95. Post-graduation, Dennis began her career in banking before transitioning to healthcare. She initially joined as director of human resources but soon took on additional responsibilities in utilization management.
"I didn’t know it at the time, but that pivot opened doors," she noted about expanding her roles over five years.
Dennis's career advanced through positions at Medica Health Plans and Healthways before leading Fulcrum Health since 2017. Under her guidance, Fulcrum experienced substantial growth with a 64% increase in revenue and a 156% rise in EBITDA.
She attributes much of her success to vision, mentorship, and team-building skills learned during her time at Minot State. "At Minot State, I learned the critical lesson that you don’t have to know everything — you just need to know where to find the answers," she remarked.
Outside of work, Dennis contributes to various boards such as AAPAN and Walker Methodist Senior Living while continuing executive education through institutions like Duke University and Harvard Business School.
Looking forward, Dennis aims to expand strategic partnerships and continue mentoring future leaders. Her advice for students aspiring to follow similar paths emphasizes clarity in goals: "Mentors and leaders are eager to help, but it’s essential to clearly articulate your goals."
Reflecting on her time at Minot State University, she stated: "It was a pivotal time in my life. It shaped both my career and personal growth." In addition to professional commitments, she enjoys golfing with her family.
Minot State University remains committed to providing rigorous academic experiences combined with active community engagement.
