The University of North Dakota (UND) is working towards creating a welcoming environment across its campus, in line with the Affinity goal of the UND LEADS Strategic Plan. The university aims to foster a lifelong sense of belonging for students, faculty, and staff through various programs and initiatives.
Jill Novotny, assistant to the vice president of UND’s Division of Marketing & Communications; Ryan Low, teaching assistant professor of History and American Indian Studies; and Gon Carlson, executive director of Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals, have introduced a special edition of UND Today that focuses on this core value. They explain that events such as Staff Recognition Ceremonies, Founders Day Banquets, and Commencement ceremonies highlight UND's dedication to honoring service and success within its community.
According to the authors, one key strategy for fostering Affinity involves recruiting and retaining a robust workforce at UND. This includes providing equitable resources and opportunities for success while acknowledging valuable contributions from team members. Furthermore, including employee voices in decision-making processes has been an important aspect since Kendall Baker initiated the formation of a Staff Senate in 1997.
Ryan Low shares his personal experience at UND: “From the moment that I accepted the job at UND, I have felt welcomed and supported by staff and faculty from across the university.” He emphasizes how programs like the Alice T. Clark Mentoring Program help new faculty integrate into the university community by offering support and opportunities to meet colleagues.
Gon Carlson reflects on her journey as a student at UND from 2019 through 2023. Coming from homeschooling in the Philippines with little knowledge about American culture or college life, she describes how UND provided guidance throughout her transition. Even after graduation, Carlson feels warmly welcomed whenever she returns to campus.
Overall, these efforts contribute to creating strong connections among students, staff members, and faculty at UND—connections that persist even after individuals leave or retire from their roles. As Carlson suggests: “UND becomes your home.”
