Minot State University and the Minot Police Department have collaborated to establish a new apprenticeship program for criminal justice students. This initiative aims to prepare future law enforcement professionals by offering tuition coverage for up to two years while providing practical experience as part-time community service officers with the Minot Police Department.

Participants in the MPD Apprenticeship Program will gain hands-on experience and, in return, commit to serving as full-time police officers with the department for at least three years after completing the program. Captain Jason Sunbakken of the Minot Police Department emphasized the partnership's strategic nature, stating it combines academic learning with real-world practice and financial support.

The community service officers will receive uniforms and use patrol vehicles designated for this program. Their training is designed to allow sworn officers to focus on high-priority tasks, enhancing public safety and departmental efficiency.

Eligible candidates are those who meet police officer requirements but lack an educational background in criminal justice or law enforcement. Gary Rabe, a professor at Minot State University, highlighted that this program provides valuable experiential learning opportunities while alleviating educational costs for students.
