In remembrance of Abi Nadeau Winsor, a former University of North Dakota (UND) student and alumna, a scholarship fund has been established to honor her memory and influence. Abi, an accounting graduate of UND, was known for her ability to brighten any environment with her positivity and inclusivity. Her promising life was cut short when she succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 25, following a 10-month battle.
Abi's influence was foundational among her friends and the university community. Anne Holland, a friend and classmate of Abi, recalls her as "the mother of our friend group," acknowledging Abi's comforting and generous nature. Abi's impact extended into her academic life as well, with her professors, such as Kate Campbell and Mike Hendrickson, recognizing her zeal and capability. Despite an initial modest goal, Abi excelled academically, finishing with an A under Hendrickson's mentorship.
In a move to commemorate Abi's enduring legacy, close friends and associates were inspired to create a scholarship fund in her name. Josh Nelson and Libby Rabon initiated the endowment, and support soon followed, including contributions from former professors like Hendrickson. The scholarship, established shortly before Abi's passing, aims to support current students in similar terms to how Abi herself was helped during her university years. Reflecting on this, Josh Nelson expressed satisfaction that "this became a reality so her name will come up every year, forever."
Recipients of the Abi Nadeau Winsor Scholarship often share connections to Abi, either through acquaintances or similar personality traits. The inaugural recipient was Abi's friend, Anne Holland, who saw the scholarship as a "full-circle moment." Marissa Linback, another recipient, benefited from the mentorship of Libby Rabon, showcasing how Abi's legacy continues to foster supportive relationships within the community.
The Herr School of Accountancy at UND maintains Abi's memory by sharing her story with scholarship recipients. Abi Nadeau Winsor's scholarship serves as a testament to the enduring impact one individual can have on a community.
