When Robert Berg contacted Mayville State University's Director of Alumni Affairs, Beth Swenson, earlier this year, his request to celebrate his degree completion was warmly received. Berg completed his Bachelor of Science in Education at Mayville State, majoring in mathematics and health, physical education, and recreation, before serving in the Army for two years.

Swenson expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to celebrate Berg, saying, “We are all very excited for what we see as a wonderful chance to celebrate a Mayville State alumnus who has honorably served his country and brought pride to his alma mater.”

Berg, who hails from Portland, N.D., spent his professional life in Michigan as a dental equipment technician at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, after his service in the Vietnam War. Reflecting on his career, Berg credited his Mayville State education for his success, particularly in the Army, due to his math background. “This started with my work in the Army during the Vietnam War,” he explained. “Because of my math training, I was selected for a more specialized occupation and stationed in Europe.”

Mayville State University President Dr. Brian Van Horn also spoke about the significance of honoring Berg. “We are delighted that we’ll be able to celebrate Robert and his accomplishments at this year’s commencement festivities,” he stated. Dr. Van Horn highlighted the university's commitment to personal service, honoring Berg's contributions while serving his country.

Excited about attending the 2025 Commencement, Berg shared his anticipation, “I look forward to putting an exclamation mark to my Mayville State education by celebrating with the Mayville State Family this year!”

The commencement ceremony is set for Friday, May 16, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse on the Mayville State campus, and welcomes all attendees.
