On April 25 and 26, Minot State University’s Flat Tail Press will participate in a celebration of printmaking, joining a global community in an event known as Print Day in May. This initiative began in 2007 with printmakers at Monterey Peninsula College in California, dedicating the first Saturday in May to creating prints. The event has since expanded worldwide, involving participants from multiple countries across five continents.

Ryan Stander, professor of art and co-director of Flat Tail Press, explained the local adaptation of the international event. “Print Day in May is a wonderful community event, but it often falls during the busiest time of year for students and faculty (the week before finals),” he said. “So, we decided to push it back a week and are calling it Print Day in May(pril).”

Minot printmakers, whether they frequently work in the studio or only occasionally, are eager to collaborate in a creative environment. This local celebration emphasizes community and the pleasure derived from creating and sharing art. Allie Nelson, a graduate of the Minot State art program and coordinator of the 2025 event, remarked, “Printing in a bustling studio during this event reminds MSU students, faculty, and alumni alike of the fun that comes from reconnecting with the art community in Minot.”

The event will take place on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 243 on the second floor of Hartnett Hall. Participants will engage in several printing processes, including screen printing and lithography. The event is open to the public, encouraging attendance to explore various printing methods and offer assistance to the artists. For more information, Ryan Stander can be contacted via email.

Minot State University, a public institution, emphasizes excellence in education, scholarship, and community engagement through various academic and public service initiatives.
