The University of North Dakota (UND) invites everyone to join the Indigenous Student Center in marking Time Out Week, an annual celebration of Indigenous cultural traditions and contributions. This event will conclude with the 53rd annual Time Out Wacipi Powwow, scheduled for April 25 and 26 at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. This cultural gathering is open to the public, featuring a traditional meal at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
A powwow, referred to as Wacipi in the Lakota/Dakota language and Ni-mi-win in Anishinabe (Chippewa/Ojibwa) language, symbolizes a celebration of life. "It is a time for people of all ages to gather, sing, dance, and share life,” the organizers explained.
On April 22, UND will welcome Sam McCracken, a notable figure at Nike known for his leadership in their Native American Business and N7 programs. His work in developing the Nike Air Native N7 shoe and establishing the N7 Fund has been influential. The fund backs initiatives in sports, economic empowerment, and education among Native American and Indigenous communities. Recognized for his contributions, McCracken will participate in a Q&A session led by Amy Henley, dean of the Nistler College of Business & Public Administration. The session will take place at 2 p.m. in the Nistler College’s Barry Auditorium.
Additionally, on April 25, the Memorial Union Gallery will unveil the "Plain of Stars" exhibition. This display is curated to celebrate UND’s Indigenous students and will feature contemporary Indigenous artworks. A reception to celebrate this exhibit is set for 3 to 5 p.m.
