The Northwest Arts Center at Minot State University will feature a new exhibition by their current Artist-in-Residence, Blaire Engel. The collection of ceramic sculptures, named "BRD," will debut on April 25 and remain open to the public until May 31.
Engel, a ceramic artist based in Minot, holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from Brandon University. Her work merges her interest in biotechnology with themes from science fiction, exploring narratives of genetic editing taken to extremes. Engel's sculptures, which often depict birds, have been shown both nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibits.
The Artist-in-Residence program at Minot State University started in 2021 and aims to provide artists with the time and space to develop their work. Residents engage with the Art department community through workshops and events and present a final exhibition at the end of their residency.
An opening reception for "BRD" will be held on April 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., featuring a juror's talk by Engel at 7 p.m. Attendees can join in person or via the Northwest Arts Center's Facebook Live. The exhibition is open to the public from Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Walter Piehl Gallery in the Gordon B. Olson Library.
The exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, funded by the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. All related events are free to attend.
JoHannah Grosz and Greg Vettel are the contacts for further information about the exhibit.
