The Northwest Arts Center at Minot State University is preparing to host the "2025 Juried Student Art Show." This event, featuring new works by students, begins with a public reception on March 27th and runs until April 24th.
The exhibition is rooted in tradition, having been held annually since the 1970s. It serves as a platform for students to gain practical experience in presenting their artwork in a professional gallery setting within the Northwest Arts Center’s Walter Piehl Gallery. Participants come from various disciplines and majors, offering pieces in mediums such as painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and mixed media collage.
For the first time since students have returned to the Art Department, their creations, produced in the newly renovated Hartnett Hall, will be on display. "This will be the first exhibition since students have been back in the Art Department," said Northwest Arts Center Director Greg Vettel ’18. "We’re excited to see student artwork created in our new space for the first time."
A distinctive element of the event is the involvement of regional artists, educators, and art professionals who participate as jurors. This year’s juror is Rachel Alfaro ’17, the executive director of the Taube Museum of Art in Minot and an MSU alumna. Alfaro, who hails from Florida but has lived in North Dakota since 2012, has a BFA in traditional arts from Minot State University.
A public reception and an online viewing are scheduled for Thursday, March 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring a juror’s talk by Alfaro and an awards presentation at 7 p.m. These events can be attended in person or accessed online through the Northwest Arts Center's Facebook Live.
Gallery hours for the exhibition are Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., while remaining closed on holidays. The Walter Piehl Gallery is located at the Gordon B. Olson Library at Minot State University, accessible via the south side entrance. Admission to the exhibition and related events is free for the public.
The programming at the Northwest Arts Center receives partial support from a grant provided by the North Dakota Council on the Arts. This grant is funded by the state legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
