Grace Candrian, a graduate student at Minot State University, shared her journey and experiences in an interview with University Communications. Candrian, who is pursuing a degree in communication sciences and disorders, chose Minot State for its strong program and proximity to family and friends.
Candrian expressed that her transition from undergraduate to graduate studies has been exciting. She appreciates the supportive and intellectually stimulating environment of the graduate community. Despite the challenges of balancing coursework, a part-time job, and social life, she has managed to thrive academically while forming lasting friendships.
In discussing her choice of university, Candrian said: "I chose Minot State because of the strong and well-rounded communication sciences and disorders department Minot State has to offer." She added that being born and raised in Minot influenced her decision to stay close to home.
Reflecting on unexpected experiences at MSU, Candrian noted: "My time at MSU has allowed me to gain more connections within the community of Minot." She also highlighted how these opportunities have contributed to her personal growth.
When asked about her major choice, Candrian mentioned inspiration from family members who are speech-language pathologists. "I have always had the passion to help others," she explained.
Looking forward, Candrian plans to graduate in spring 2026 with hopes of finding a job as a speech-language pathologist either in Minot or nearby. Her main challenge during college has been maintaining a balance between work, school, and life. However, she believes she has learned flexibility over time.
Her favorite classes include Early Interdisciplinary Studies and Techniques in Communication Disorders. These courses have contributed significantly to her academic development.
Candrian's perspective on life has evolved since starting at MSU. She stated: "Being in my first year of graduate school has made me realize how quickly life goes by."
As for hobbies outside academics, Candrian enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing pickleball, watching new shows, and visiting the lake.
