Humans are expected to return to the Moon within the next decade, and this new era of lunar exploration could include astronauts with physical disabilities. The European Space Agency (ESA) is actively working to make space travel more accessible for individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities. This initiative may lead to a prosthetic limb leaving the first footprint on the Moon.

Traditionally, astronauts have had to meet stringent physical requirements, but these criteria are now being re-evaluated. Research conducted by aerospace and biomechanics experts is exploring opportunities for people with physical disabilities to participate in space missions, including journeys to the Moon and Mars.

NASA has been investing in research focused on restraints and mobility aids designed to assist all individuals in moving around spacecraft cabins. Additionally, NASA is developing functional aids that enhance independence and mobility for those with disabilities aboard current U.S. spacecraft.

In 2022, ESA launched its Parastronaut Feasibility Project aimed at integrating individuals with disabilities into human spaceflight. A parastronaut is defined as an astronaut with a physical disability who undergoes training for space missions.

The University of North Dakota has conducted pioneering studies on parastronauts, examining how disabled individuals can access two current U.S. crewed spacecraft: NASA's Orion capsule and Boeing's CST-100 Starliner. Researchers Pablo De León, Keith Crisman, Komal Mangle, Kavya Manyapu, along with Jesse Rhoades and Rebecca Rhoades, identified accessibility challenges faced by future parastronauts.

Their findings suggest that individuals with leg amputations are nearly as agile as non-disabled counterparts in modern spacecraft. The team aims to develop solutions benefiting astronauts of all abilities.

John McFall became ESA’s first certified parastronaut after losing his right leg above the knee at age 19 due to a motorcycle accident. Though not yet assigned a mission, he is medically cleared for an International Space Station mission.

Current astronaut selection prioritizes peak fitness levels so crew members can perform identical tasks; however, integrating parastronauts requires balancing safety and accessibility concerns.

Technological advancements in spacecraft design mean inclusion no longer compromises safety. While adaptations like handholds could be costly when retrofitted onto existing crafts—engineers might explore alternatives such as Velcro enhancements or specialized prosthetics tailored specifically towards zero or partial gravity environments found within specific craft settings akin sports-specific designs used today outside Earth-bound contexts.
