Middle school math teams compete at Mayville State University

Middle school math students recently competed in a math meet held at Mayville State University. The event saw participation from various teams, with Larimore’s Alge-Brrr Bears emerging as the team winners with a score of 311. The team comprised Gabriella Pierce, Jenna Nusviken, Nic Pritchett, and Marcus Hoverson.

The Central Valley Valiants were runners-up, scoring 310 points. Team members included Cameron Larson, Mallory Kloster, Josephine Fuglesten, and Christina Hershey. Hope-Page's Sigma Squad secured third place with a score of 269, represented by Chris Bender, Bennett Mewes, Jesse Burnell, and Nora Thompson.

Teams also engaged in an interactive Kahoot! game. Hope-Page Sigma Squad claimed first place honors with 20,364 points. Northwood followed with 17,257 points and Hatton took third place with 16,889 points.

In individual competitions among eighth graders, Mallory Kloster from Central Valley achieved the top score of 77. Bennett Mewes from Hope-Page and Nic Prichett from Larimore tied for second place with 74 points each.

For seventh graders, Benjamin Askim from Hatton led with 68 points. Noah Naastad from Hatton secured second place with 62 points while Gabriella Pierce from Larimore took third place with 59 points.

The day concluded with an awards ceremony featuring prizes for participants.

Participants came from various schools including Hatton Flyers advised by Travis Cormier; Central Valley Valiants under Brad Nelson; Larimore Alge-Brrr Bears guided by Ben Jacobson; May-Port CG ÷ and Conquer led by Allison Johnson; Finley-Sharon Factorials! coached by Sarah Scheitel; Hope-Page Sigma Squad directed by Alex Holen; Northwood Trojans managed by Christian Kvilvang; and Thompson under Brandy George.

The event was coordinated by Mayville State University faculty members Taylor Simon, Fred Strand, and Mary Townsend along with assistance from Math Club members and mathematics students at the university.

“We enjoy offering events such as this for area students,” stated Dr. Brian Van Horn, President of Mayville State University. “It is our privilege to give young people the opportunity to test their skills and expand their knowledge in academic interest areas. Mathematics is a critical need area in our state so encouraging them in this area is especially appropriate.”

Dr. Van Horn further expressed gratitude to the faculty members involved: “Thank you to our Division of Science and Mathematics faculty and students and members of the Math Club for their leadership and work that made it happen.” He also acknowledged the contributions of students’ coaches and school administrators who facilitated participation in the event.
