The Minot Chamber Chorale, led by Emerson Eads, director of choral activities at Minot State University, will perform the North Dakota premiere of "Requiem for Solace" by Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen. This work features a mixed choir, mezzo-soprano, and boy soprano soloists, integrating the traditional Requiem Mass text with poetry by Emily Dickinson.
Scheduled for February 23 at 3 p.m., the performance will take place in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall. Admission is free, though attendees are encouraged to make a free-will offering to support the arts in Minot.
Mezzo-soprano Hannah Penn will make her North Dakota debut alongside Minot native Declan Bourquin as the child soprano soloist. "We are honored to have the Scandinavian Heritage Association as our season sponsor for this poignant concert," Eads stated. The event commemorates the 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to the United States.
Arnesen's "Requiem for Solace" aims to provide comfort and remembrance. Its themes resonate with the Chorale’s celebration titled Crossings: A Choral Celebration of 200 Years of Scandinavian Immigration to the United States. Eads added that it "stands as a tribute to the enduring legacy of immigrants."
Musicians from both the Minot Symphony Orchestra and Bismarck Symphony Orchestra will participate, including a percussion ensemble led by MSU professor Mariah Taller and trumpeter Kennedy Cowart from Bismarck Symphony.
The Chorale now includes nearly 70 voices from various community sectors, including students and faculty from Minot State University and members of the United States Air Force.
