UND Provost Eric Link has appointed Ryan Adams as the interim dean of the College of Engineering & Mines. Adams, who is currently the Terry and Diane Severson Endowed Professor of National Security and associate dean of National Security, has been with the college for six years.
“I’m grateful to Dr. Adams for his willingness to serve as interim dean for the College of Engineering & Mines,” Link said. “He brings experience, vision and a desire to serve the students, staff and faculty of the College during this time of transition."
Link highlighted that the college has experienced significant growth recently and expressed confidence in Adams' leadership during the national search for a permanent dean.
Adams stated, “I am so excited to step into this role at such a dynamic time. The College is expanding its collaborations with more of our stakeholders on a variety of initiatives such as the new STEM building, the National Security Initiative, and statewide use of artificial intelligence."
Adams will begin his new role on January 2, 2025, serving until a permanent dean is appointed. Brad Rundquist, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, chairs the search committee assisted by Academic Search. The appointment process aims to conclude by July 1 or shortly thereafter.
Since 2022, Adams has served as associate dean for National Security at UND's College of Engineering & Mines. His tenure includes enhancing national security research funding and outcomes in collaboration with UND’s Division of Research & Economic Development.
Adams also contributed significantly while serving as Grand Challenge Champion for Data & Computational Research and director of the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at UND. His previous academic appointments include positions at UNC Charlotte before joining UND in 2019.
Before academia, Adams worked with the United States Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center as a program manager and development engineer. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Idaho.
The College offers over 70 degree programs across engineering, computer science, and geology fields. With an enrollment exceeding 2,600 students in Fall 2024, it stands as UND's largest college offering both on-campus and online courses accredited by ABET.
