A University of North Dakota (UND) Commercial Aviation student, Ali Moses, was surprised with a $5,000 scholarship from Sanford Health on December 5. Moses, a junior and military police officer with the North Dakota National Guard, is one of four recipients of this year's veterans and military scholarship program by the rural health system.
The presentation took place in Aerospace Dean Robert Kraus' office, where Jess Leraas from Sanford Health handed over an oversized check to Moses. Wesley Van Dell, chief flight instructor for rotorcraft at UND, praised Moses as a "star student" and supported her application with a recommendation letter.
Leraas acknowledged the competitive nature of the scholarship applications this year and commended Moses for embodying the values of dedication, leadership, and commitment to service. In response, Moses expressed gratitude to those who assisted her in preparing her scholarship applications.
Originally scheduled for December 3, the event was postponed due to a fire assistance call involving Moses' role with the Thompson Volunteer Fire Department. The call required coordination among UND staff and Leraas to reschedule the presentation.
Moses plans to work as a certified flight instructor before potentially moving into roles within the oil and gas industry or emergency medical services (EMS). Her interest in EMS was sparked by an encounter with a Sanford Health EMS flight demonstration at her volunteer fire department.
Sanford Health awards four scholarships annually to military students who are veterans or active-duty members pursuing full-time degrees. Angie Carpenter from UND's Veteran and Military Affairs expressed appreciation for Sanford Health's support through this scholarship program.
