Jacob Jensen, a computer science major at Minot State University, is preparing for life after graduation with aspirations that go beyond the traditional 9-to-5 job. Jensen, who has excelled in both cross country and track & field, aims to make a meaningful impact through his work.

"I want to do something that will have an impact — a positive impact," Jensen said. "I don’t want to do something mundane just for corporate gain."

Jensen's interest in artificial intelligence and data science was sparked during a summer research experience at Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2022. "It interests me because of an opportunity at Wisconsin-Eau Claire in their Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates run through the National Science Foundation in 2022," he explained.

His achievements extend beyond academics; he has set records at MSU in various running events and earned accolades such as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic Team of Excellence and the NSIC Elite 18 Award.

Reflecting on his athletic career, Jensen said, "It had its ups and downs, but I guess that’s pretty common." He emphasizes the importance of consistency and injury prevention in training.

As he wraps up his collegiate athletic career at the NSIC Championships, Jensen plans to continue running marathons. He will soon move to Eugene, Oregon with his girlfriend as she completes an externship.

"Tokyo has a really cool one. I’ll probably take some time off after Fargo, but I’ll keep running," he noted about future marathon plans.

Jensen credits his grandparents for supporting his educational journey. Despite initial doubts from some family members about his independence, he believes pursuing a college degree was crucial.

"My grandma really values it," he said about graduation. "After going through everything, I think I’ve come to understand how important it is."

Minot State University remains committed to providing rigorous academic experiences and community engagement opportunities.
