Jane Kostenko's journey reflects a life of diverse civic engagement and historical commitment. As the first female president of Minot State University's student government, she has also participated in excavations at a historic Maryland church and volunteered for the American Birding Association.
Kostenko grew up in Minot, North Dakota, majoring in German and earth science. She earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in both subjects with a concentration in journalism, followed by education degrees. During her studies, she was involved in various extracurricular activities including writing for the Red and Green student newspaper and The Beaver yearbook, participating in clubs, women’s chorus, Phi Sigma Pi honor fraternity, and leading the student government.
Her involvement with Phi Sigma Pi led her to Millersville University in Pennsylvania where she pursued a Master of Education degree. Afterward, Kostenko settled in Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland. Her initial work as an archaeologist at Historic St. Mary’s City spanned over a decade before moving on to roles at St. Mary's College of Maryland and with the county's department on aging.
In retirement since 2017, Kostenko continues to contribute to her community alongside her husband J. Tyler Bell. In March 2023, they were awarded Historic St. Mary’s City's Cross Bottony for their service contributions. They also volunteer at institutions like the Calvert Marine Museum and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
Kostenko returned to Minot volunteering for the American Birding Association which honored them with the Claudia Wilds Award in 2009 for their service.
Reflecting on her formative years at Minot State University, Kostenko stated: “Growing up in North Dakota and my undergraduate years at Minot absolutely made me the person I am.” She appreciated being able to engage deeply due to smaller university settings compared to larger institutions.
Minot State University is committed to excellence through rigorous academics and community engagement.
