Growing up in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Nahom Geda has been known for his innovative mindset and interest in technology. He is now on a mission to change how small businesses understand and engage with their customers.
Geda chose Minot State University intentionally. “Minot State University offers a vibrant community of international students like myself, creating a welcoming environment where I can connect with others who share similar experiences,” he said. “The small teacher-to-student ratio appeals to me as it means I’ll receive personalized attention and build strong relationships with my professors.”
Involved in campus activities, Geda engaged with the various events at Minot State. “The variety of events on campus keeps things exciting and offers opportunities to socialize, learn, and have fun with fellow students,” he stated.
His passion led him to the university’s computer science and mathematics department. For his capstone class, Geda embarked on developing a customer sentiment analysis web app designed to provide small businesses insights into customer feedback using AI technologies. “I grew up in a community where routine was the norm, but I yearned for something greater,” he explained.
Balancing academic responsibilities was initially challenging for Geda. However, through planning and goal setting, he managed to progress steadily on his project. “Time management and social interaction were hurdles I faced," Geda shared.
He envisions this project as the beginning of his career in full-stack development. "This project marks the beginning of my journey towards a career where I can fully utilize my skills," he said.
Reflecting on his experience so far, Geda appreciates the support from Minot State University: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the encouragement of my professors," he acknowledged.
For those interested in web development or computer science, Geda advises starting with basics and engaging in side projects alongside classes: "Start with the basics, practice regularly," he suggested.
With determination and enthusiasm for innovation, Geda aims to make an impact in technology's evolving landscape.
Minot State University is committed to providing excellence through education and community engagement.
