The Minot State Department of Math, Data, and Technology is set to host an AI and Data Summit featuring Silicon Valley data scientist Mark Graves as the keynote speaker. The event is scheduled for April 29 at the MSU Student Center Conference Center, focusing on the impact of AI on healthcare.
The summit will include two sessions: early events exclusive to the MSU campus and later events open to the public. Proceedings will begin with an interdisciplinary panel discussion at 2 p.m., titled “How is AI and data science impacting your discipline?” Graves will present his first keynote address, “AI, Ethics, and Healthcare,” at 3:15 p.m., followed by a poster session showcasing MSU students' work at 4:15 p.m.
Public events commence at 6 p.m. with refreshments, leading to Graves' community address on “Future of AI: Hopes, Fears, and Compassion” at 6:30 p.m., followed by an open Q&A session at 7:30 p.m.
Daren Erisman, MSU assistant professor of data science, commented on AI's growing influence in healthcare: “Artificial intelligence is beginning to impact our world as never before, including healthcare. All of us will be affected as these AI tools diagnose diseases, create personalized treatment plans, assist in surgeries, and streamline administrative tasks. While beneficial, using artificial intelligence also challenges data privacy, equity, and trust in this new technology."
Erisman further emphasized the summit's aim to tackle these pressing issues with insights from Dr. Mark Graves. Graves holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Michigan and has extensive experience in AI development for healthcare applications.
Graves remarked on the importance of a constructive approach to AI: "Rather than only trying to prevent harms from technology, a constructive approach to compassionate AI can benefit society and define a target for AI development that also addresses concerns about how AI might behave in the future.”
Free parking will be available in the north lot of the MSU Student Center. The event receives funding from a Minot State Cultural and Intellectual Engagement Council grant.
