Bill Harbort, a New York native and Syracuse University graduate, has been a part of Minot State University's art department since 1996. Known for his engaging teaching style, Harbort encourages students to ask questions while building a strong foundation in art. He has also contributed significantly to the local art scene by co-founding NOTSTOCK, an annual art event in Minot.
Beyond teaching, Harbort serves as a mentor to many students, offering guidance and support. In an interview with Minot State University Communications, he shared insights into his career and experiences at the university.
Before joining Minot State, Harbort worked as a package designer for Revlon and as an art director for a children's educational software company. He also established himself as an award-winning automotive artist.
Harbort chose Minot State for its outstanding art department. He continuously adapts his teaching methods to incorporate technological advancements while maintaining foundational principles in visual communications.
He enjoys teaching "real world" assignments like the ART 375 class project at the Northwest Art Center pop-up shop. This project allows students to explore art entrepreneurship by creating products for sale.
Reflecting on his career highlights, Harbort values staying connected with graduates and witnessing their professional growth. He advises aspiring artists to be aware of the various opportunities in the field and prepares them by encouraging critical thinking.
Outside work, Harbort enjoys family time, making art, automobiles, and spending time with his two dogs.
