Minot State University faculty members Evan Borisinkoff and Leisa Harmon have been awarded $1,000 scholarships through the Dakota Digital Academy (DDA). They are among 15 faculty members from the North Dakota University System (NDUS) who received these scholarships to participate in professional development activities related to artificial intelligence (AI).
Borisinkoff serves as an associate professor in special education and oversees the disability human services programs at Minot State. Harmon is an assistant professor in communication sciences and disorders, as well as the First-Year Experience director.
The DDA scholarships aim to promote professional learning and AI integration in academic settings. NDUS Chancellor Mark Hagerott emphasized the importance of embracing AI technologies now to prepare students for a future workforce that will be shaped by AI and digitization.
To qualify for these scholarships, applicants were required to identify a conference or professional development event they wished to attend and explain how it would enhance their teaching methods.
Borisinkoff expressed his eagerness to learn more about AI at the 39th Annual Assistive Technology Conference sponsored by California State University Northridge. He hopes to incorporate insights from the conference into his courses on assistive technology.
Harmon plans to explore ethical and effective uses of AI at the Teaching and Learning with AI conference. She stresses the importance of equipping students with necessary knowledge while ensuring they understand how to use AI responsibly.
The scholarship recipients represent diverse fields such as nursing, social sciences, pharmacy, nutrition, dietetics, and agriculture. The Dakota Digital Academy supports educational initiatives across North Dakota by adapting to evolving IT demands. It collaborates with NDUS campuses and business partners to offer digital-cyber oriented education and training.
