Robert Hubbard, an alumnus of Minot State University, has found solace through writing following the tragic loss of his youngest son, Auggie. After Auggie took his life at 19 due to clinical depression, Hubbard wrote a book titled "Scenes with My Son: Love and Grief in the Wake of Suicide." He describes his creative process as a means to express both joy and sorrow.

Hubbard structured his book into three sections detailing Auggie's life and their family's experiences. "Act I, entitled 'Beautiful Boy,' shares stories from Auggie’s joy-filled if eccentric early childhood," Hubbard explained. "'Act II, ‘The Family Monsters,’ chronicles his battle with clinical depression emerging during adolescence. Act III, ‘The Life After,’ shares tender and harrowing stories from the days and months following Auggie’s death."

He hopes the book will help others who have faced similar losses or wish to understand such experiences better. Nicholas Wolterstorff, who wrote the introduction for the book, believes it will provide comfort to those who have suffered similar grief.

Writing served as more than just personal catharsis for Hubbard; it connected him with others who shared similar experiences. “I found comfort in reading the stories of other people who had gone through similar experiences,” he noted.

In addition to sharing memories of Auggie's struggles with depression, Hubbard wanted readers to celebrate his son's life. “Everybody thinks that their kids are amazing and outstanding," he said. "But my son Auggie truly was just a remarkable, colorful character.”

Hubbard's journey began at Minot State University where he double majored in English and Theater. His academic path led him to Bowling Green State University for a doctorate in Theatre. Since 2002, he has taught at Northwestern College while also serving as department chair.

Minot State inducted him into its Academic Hall of Fame in 2014 for his contributions to academia. He remains active in theater arts alongside his family members including acting roles at MSU Summer Theatre.

Minot State University is known for its dedication to education excellence through rigorous academic programs and community engagement.
