Ryan Stander, an associate professor of fine art at Minot State University, has carved a niche for himself in the world of photography and printmaking. Spending much of his time in the darkroom, Stander explores various image-making techniques ranging from digital to alternative processes. He shared insights into his work and teaching approach during an interview with Minot State’s University Communications.

Stander teaches multiple photography courses at MSU, covering historical, modern film, and contemporary digital photography. "My specialty is photography," he explained, detailing his role in teaching different levels of the subject including digital and smartphone photography.

His creative work encompasses a wide range of practices within photography and printmaking. "Right now, I am working on a series of tintype self-portraits about trauma, illness, and recovery," he noted.

The decision to join MSU was influenced by its active faculty and student community. Stander appreciates the collaborative environment at the university: "I enjoyed the sense of community in the department and university."

Reflecting on memorable experiences at MSU, Stander mentioned several events such as NOTSTOCK and Flat Tail Press visiting artists. He also values witnessing students succeed after months of hard work on capstone projects.

Stander's passion for art education stems from his desire to help students achieve their creative visions. "I love seeing them grow as artists," he said.

Artistic pursuits have been a part of Stander's life since childhood. Inspired by family members using cameras like Voigtlander and Canon SLRs, he began capturing images with a Kodak Disc camera in sixth grade.

Throughout his career, various artists have influenced him including Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. As his artistic awareness grew, photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Sally Mann became significant influences.

While acknowledging that studying art isn't necessary for becoming an artist, Stander highlighted benefits offered by university programs such as exposure to new ideas and access to resources that might be otherwise unavailable.

Teaching art complements his practice as an artist: "As an artist you must always be learning which puts you in the position of the student." This continuous learning process helps him relate to students' experiences with failure as part of growth.

Outside academia, Stander enjoys spending time with family—his wife Karina and sons Willem and Mathis—and engaging in hobbies like reading or woodworking.

Stander holds advanced degrees in both art (BA from Northwestern College) and theology (MA from Kairos University). For him these fields intersect frequently: "The two fields almost always come into some dynamic conversation as I make art or write theology."

Minot State University remains committed to providing rigorous academic experiences along with vibrant campus life dedicated towards excellence across education scholarship public service community engagement initiatives alike
