Katy Allers, a Wasilla, Alaska native, has taken various paths in her career and education. With a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's in education, she is currently working on a theater minor while serving as the program director at the POWER Center at Minot State University.
In an interview with Minot State's University Communications, Allers shared insights into her journey and experiences at MSU. She recounted her upbringing in Alaska and her eventual decision to attend Minot State due to family ties in North Dakota. Despite being accepted elsewhere for basketball, an injury led her to choose Minot State instead.
Allers' involvement at MSU spans multiple activities, particularly within the theater department. "At one point, there was no theatre faculty," she said. "Some students who knew me from outside MSU approached me to help revive Campus Players." Her efforts led to the successful production of 'Suite Surrender,' which revitalized student interest in theater.
Her career path includes roles as an administrative assistant and positions within the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities before becoming director of TRIO Student Support Services. She expressed satisfaction with her current role, stating that it allows her to support students through their college journeys.
Reflecting on changes implemented since taking her role at the POWER Center, Allers highlighted initiatives like completing performance reports for the US Department of Education and enhancing facilities for students. "We have worked hard to create a comfortable space for students," she noted.
Allers also shared fond memories from both her time as a student and now as an employee at Minot State. From memorable performances by artists like Johnny Holmes to directing plays such as "Suite Surrender," these experiences hold significant value for her.
Outside work, Allers enjoys camping with her family and engaging in hobbies like knitting and crocheting. She remains committed to lifelong learning, having taken classes every semester while employed at MSU.
Minot State University is recognized for its dedication to academic excellence and community engagement through diverse learning opportunities.
