Minot, N.D. - Raman Sachdev, an assistant professor and program coordinator at Minot State University, has shared insights into his journey and passion for philosophy in a recent interview. Sachdev's interest in philosophy began early, with a high school teacher dubbing him "Plato" alongside a friend named "Aristotle." His formal engagement with the subject took shape during college.
Reflecting on his teaching experience since joining Minot State in 2022, Sachdev stated, "Over the past two years, I’ve had a pleasant experience teaching here at Minot State." He emphasizes building rapport with students through engaging discussions that challenge both him and his students.
Sachdev acknowledges the competitive nature of securing tenure-track positions in philosophy. He remarked on the scarcity of such opportunities compared to Ivy League admissions: "It is five times more likely for a high school applicant to be accepted into an Ivy League institution than for a person holding a Ph.D. in philosophy to secure a tenure-track job."
In addition to academic endeavors, Sachdev appreciates the community aspect of Minot State. Describing his first outing after moving to Minot in 2022, he said, "Our first outing was the Community Rocks! event at MSU’s outdoor Summer Theatre... That was quite a special introduction to the Magic City."
When discussing his approach to teaching philosophy, he credited various influences from his academic journey. From conversing rather than lecturing to providing historical context when introducing philosophical figures, these methods have shaped his educational practices.
His academic background spans several institutions including Dartmouth College and Loyola University for undergraduate studies and further graduate work at the University of Chicago and University of South Florida where he completed his Ph.D.
Sachdev traces back his philosophical inclinations to childhood conversations recognized by educators as reflective of classical thinkers like Plato and Aristotle. A significant moment came when reading Descartes’s Meditations during college which fueled his affinity for skeptical philosophy.
For those unfamiliar with philosophy's appeal, Sachdev articulates its value: “Philosophy prompts us to ask ourselves how we can justify those beliefs.” He highlights its role in understanding personal views while appreciating differing perspectives—a skill crucial for balanced judgment.
Outside academia, music remains an enduring passion; from playing percussion instruments like drums and guitar compositionally active across media platforms such as MTV or NBC shows' soundtracks—he continues exploring creative outlets alongside travel experiences worldwide shared fondly alongside family adventures since relocating within North Dakota region utilizing local airport connectivity benefits globally enriching life beyond classroom settings too!
In closing remarks about facing life's challenges gracefully through compassion shown by others helping during difficult times left lasting impacts inspiring reciprocal kindness wherever possible given circumstances allow it likewise motivating similar charitable acts forward positively impacting future interactions ahead!
