MINOT, N.D. — Cari Olson has been a key figure at Minot State University for 25 years, working as the director of institutional research and contributing to various committees on campus. As the sole member of the Institutional Research (IR) department, Olson handles data reporting and administration of surveys like Staff Satisfaction and Faculty Satisfaction.

Olson began her career at MSU in 2001 with the Rural Crime and Justice Center (RCJC), later transitioning to her current role in 2010 after serving as Institutional Projects Coordinator. She noted, "The IR office is tasked with reporting institutional data to the Integrated Postsecondary Education System (IPEDS) throughout the year."

Reflecting on her career choice, Olson shared that despite her background not being directly related to institutional research, she had skills like critical thinking and problem-solving that proved valuable. "What attracted me to the position was first, it was a full-time permanent position," she said.

Olson's involvement extends beyond her primary duties. She has served on multiple committees and expressed enjoyment in collaborative work: "Being an office of one, I enjoy working on these committees because it allows me to work alongside others."

Her past roles include working at RCJC where she participated in initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhood Initiative. A highlight from this period was a fellowship at the Federal Law Enforcement Center where she worked on law enforcement training programs.

In addition to her professional contributions, Olson has been active in MSU's Staff Senate, participating in initiatives aimed at improving staff satisfaction. "Serving on Staff Senate is such a rewarding experience," she remarked.

Olson's academic journey began at MSU with a degree in criminal justice which led to opportunities within RCJC before moving into institutional research. She attributes her education as foundational for both roles.

Outside of work, Olson enjoys spending time with family and engaging in hobbies such as reading and gardening. Her personal life includes marriage to Cory Olson for 22 years and raising two children who have pursued their own educational paths.

Olson also serves as deputy Title IX coordinator at MSU: "If a Title IX complaint goes to a hearing, my role is to evaluate all evidence for relevance."

Minot State University remains committed to excellence through rigorous academics and community engagement.
