Janelle Green, a North Dakota native, has completed her first year as a faculty member at Minot State University (MSU). Green teaches in the human anatomy and physiology department and serves as the director of the cadaver lab.
Raised in Arvilla, near Grand Forks, Green began her higher education journey at Minot State. She later earned her undergraduate degrees from Mayville State University and a master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Additionally, she holds a master's in education from the University of Jamestown.
“I graduated from Mayville State University in 2009 with my B.S. degree in biology and in 2011 with my B.S. in composite science education degree,” Green said. “I also graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2011 with my master's in general biology and in 2020 from the University of Jamestown with my master's in education: curriculum and instruction.”
Green's interest in biology was influenced by her mother, a high school biology teacher. Despite initially resisting following her mother's path, she eventually found herself drawn to teaching.
“After high school, I came to Minot State for a couple semesters where I had reluctantly decided to pursue a degree in education... So, there I sat, applying for the education program and realizing what a major influence she had been,” said Green.
Her career choice aligns well with her passion for biology and teaching others about science.
“It wasn't until much later that I realized the passion I had for education... I'm passionate about teaching and making sure students are prepared for their futures both in their careers and within their lives,” said Green.
Green attributes much of her success to her parents' influence. Her mother instilled curiosity as a science educator while her father encouraged hard work.
“I could contribute almost all of these attributes to my mother...and to my dad, who taught me to work hard,” said Green.
Returning to teach at MSU holds special significance for Green since it was where she first studied college-level science courses.
“My personal favorite thing about Minot State is that it was the first college I attended out of high school... The memory and overall feeling is pretty special to me,” she said.
At MSU, Green appreciates working with colleagues she admires while enjoying various opportunities available on campus.
“One of my favorite things about Minot State are my co-workers...and endless opportunities that arise,” said Green. “Minot State is different from other universities because it is relatively small but has various opportunities.”
Minot State University remains committed to providing quality educational experiences through active learning environments within its vibrant campus community.
