Nathon Lakoduk, a Minot native, initially pursued English education at Minot State University before finding his calling in management information systems (MIS). Encouraged by family and faculty, he explored different academic paths before settling on MIS during his sophomore year. "Management information systems was my third change in major in my sophomore year," Lakoduk stated. His brother Jordon's advice led him to consider MIS after brief stints in English education and computer science.
Lakoduk actively participated in student organizations such as the SWIFT club and the Data Science club, gaining practical experience through competitions. “We did cybersecurity competitions which were really challenging, but they also taught us all a lot,” he noted. His involvement earned him national recognition with an honorable mention from the American Statistical Association Fall Data Challenge.
His professors played a significant role in shaping his educational journey. "I really enjoyed my experience with all the professors in the College of Business," he said, appreciating their support beyond textbook learning. Key figures included Dr. Chad Fenner, Dr. Serena Pontenila, Dr. Daren Erisman, and Dr. Kristi Berg.
Internships were pivotal for Lakoduk's career development, with placements at First Western Bank & Trust and North Dakota University System (NDUS) facilitated by Dr. Berg’s guidance. “Dr. Berg advised me on the right choice to make when I had to decide between staying at First Western and taking an internship at the North Dakota University system,” he shared.
Lakoduk has accepted a position as a Business Intelligence Analyst with NDUS starting May 20 and plans to engage in music and train for a half marathon this fall.
“I really recommend students to get involved in a club or organization,” Lakoduk advised incoming MSU students, emphasizing its impact on motivation and peer influence.
