During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chenoa Erz made a significant change in her academic path. With nearly completing her master's program in physical therapy, she decided to transfer to Minot State University (MSU) to pursue a career in education.

Erz experienced moments of doubt about her decision. "Definitely, the first week (after her decision) was tough. I never wanted to be a failure at anything, and to me, this felt like the sense of failure, not completing the physical therapy degree," Erz said. She realized that teaching would bring her happiness and found peace with her choice.

The pandemic exacerbated her doubts as it forced isolation and affected her ability to engage with her studies. "I’m a visual, hands-on learner, and when COVID hit in the middle of grad school, it complicated a degree that is very visual and very hands-on," Erz explained.

Her parents supported her emotionally during this period. "They were really open to me coming home," Erz shared. A conversation with her mother helped confirm teaching as the right path for Erz. Her mother reminded her of childhood aspirations: “She looked at me and said...‘What did you write?’ I said, teacher.”

Initially earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Dakota, Erz believed it aids in understanding classroom behaviors. "I think my psychology degree helps me be a better teacher," she noted.

Through clinical experiences, she discovered an affinity for teaching middle grades over lower ones. While transferring schools was not new for Erz—having moved from UND to UMary—returning for another undergraduate degree presented some challenges.

"The transfer process to grad school was easy...Transferring here was easy," she stated but acknowledged some awkwardness taking freshman-level courses alongside younger students.

MSU faculty played an essential role in supporting Erz's transition and success in their program. "The advisors and professors made my transfer to Minot State easy for me," Erz expressed gratitude towards Kathy Hintz, Lisa Borden-King, and Karen Foley for their assistance throughout her studies.

Minot State University is known for its commitment to excellence through rigorous academics and community engagement.
