Jonah Thomas, a senior from Nekoosa, Wisconsin, is set to become the first in his family to graduate from a four-year university. This achievement will be celebrated at Minot State University's 109th Commencement Ceremony on Friday.
Thomas expressed his feelings about this milestone: "My parents went to a tech school, so stepping into a university was a big leap for our family." His journey to Minot began unexpectedly when he accompanied a friend on a campus visit and decided it was the right place for him.
He chose to study biology with a minor in chemistry due to his interest in the medical field. "I’ve always known I wanted to work in the medical field," Thomas stated. His experience at Minot State has been enhanced by connections made through the science department. "The staff has been incredible at getting me in contact with doctors at the hospital," he said, which provided him hands-on experience that confirmed his decision to pursue medicine.
In addition to academics, Thomas participated actively in extracurricular activities such as track and field, intramural sports, and pep band. He also engaged with the Residence Hall Association and conducted research under Dr. Bryan Schmidt.
Looking ahead, Thomas plans to attend medical school: "I am going to continue my education by attending medical school," he shared. His time at Minot has prepared him well for this next step towards becoming a doctor.
Reflecting on his time at Minot State University and looking forward with optimism, Thomas concluded with enthusiasm: “Go Beavers!”
Minot State University is committed to providing excellent education through active learning environments and community engagement.
