Karen Robinson, a math enthusiast from Des Lacs Burlington High School, has been on a journey to find her career path in mathematics. Her interest in math began during high school when she realized her passion for the subject. "High school is when I figured out that I'm a total math geek," Robinson said. Initially considering atmospheric science, she shifted focus as her love for math grew.
Robinson chose Minot State University (MSU) to pursue her ambition of teaching mathematics. She reflected on her decision: "After I decided that I wanted to do math. I was like, what could I do with math? I could teach math." Her experiences in high school and at MSU solidified her choice, particularly through helping peers with homework and teaching Sunday school classes.
Her clinical experiences further confirmed her passion for teaching. "Once I got into doing my clinicals and I got to actually teach a lesson for the first time... It was really just the experience of actually helping other people," Robinson recalled.
Support from faculty at MSU played a crucial role in her academic journey. Professors Kevin Vang and Chelsea Hultz were particularly influential. Robinson noted, "My professor, Kevin Vang, is phenomenal at making ridiculous things make sense... Professor Chelsea Hultz is amazing." Additionally, Jennifer Sherman provided valuable guidance as Robinson's academic advisor.
Looking ahead, Robinson aims to pursue graduate studies in mathematics after completing two prerequisite courses at MSU. She shared her plans: "I want to do a master's in math... I applied, and they totally want me."
Minot State University remains committed to providing quality education and fostering community engagement through active learning environments.
