The children attended school through eighth grade, and their father kept an extensive library of books in the home

Ramsey County Historical Society issued the following announcement.

In the 1870s, the Heman Gibbs family earned their living as market farmers, but that didn’t mean they let education pass them by. The children attended school through eighth grade, and their father kept an extensive library of books in the home. His accounting books indicate that they subscribed to multiple national magazines, as well, including St. Nicholas, an illustrated magazine “for young folks,” copies of which can be found online today. In the historical fiction book recently published by RCHS, "Grasshoppers in My Bed: Lillie Belle Gibbs, Minnesota Farm Girl, 1877," eleven-year-old Lillie—an avid reader—includes her commentary and sketches on Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates, The Swiss Family Robinson, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Little Women.

Join us on Thursday, June 16 for an online History Revealed presentation with author Terry Swanson and Peggy Stern, and this Friday, June 17 at Gibbs Farm for special tours and artist activities with Terry and Peggy! For more info on both events, and how to buy the book, see our website at www.rchs.com.
