Mason Curtis, an aspiring medical doctor from the small town of Mayhill, New Mexico, is making strides in his educational journey with a clear vision to address healthcare challenges in rural communities. In a town with just 34 residents, Curtis observed the difficulties locals faced in accessing medical services. This firsthand experience shaped his desire to pursue a career in family medicine.
Curtis highlighted the skepticism and logistical hurdles rural inhabitants encounter, saying, “There were people who didn’t necessarily trust doctors or didn’t have the time to drive an hour to the nearest clinic.” His commitment to bridging these gaps and serving communities in need directed him to a career in medicine.
Currently studying at the University of North Dakota (UND), Curtis is part of an accelerated 4+1 Biology program, allowing him to work towards a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously, thus progressing swiftly in his academic pursuits.
