Minot State University art professors Ryan Stander and Micah Bloom have been featured in the New Christian Makers (NCM) journal. The publication highlights their diverse artistic styles and contributions to the dialogue between art and faith across various Christian denominations.
Stander expressed that the journal “allows for a diversity of approaches and thoughts about the relationship of art and faith.” He noted that some artists prefer to be known as ‘Christian artists,’ while others identify as contemporary artists whose work is informed by their faith, creating a “wonderfully diverse dialogue” among contributors.
Stander’s contribution, titled “Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid,” is a series of prints on wood and plexiglass. These works address ecclesial and social issues such as political divisions, hypocrisy, isolationism, and the search for God.
Bloom contributed pieces from his “Radiosity” project, which investigates light and reflected color. His work is influenced by the Light and Space movement from the 1960s and 1970s. The pieces feature white surfaces that emit glowing colors from unseen angles. Bloom stated, “Light is a wild thing, and trying to harness it can be difficult.” He emphasized the surprising results achieved through patient exploration with light.
New Christian Makers was launched by Maker Press in January 2024 to connect Christian artists with galleries and enthusiasts. Each issue features 30 selected makers chosen by a jury of artists and curators.
