Mayville State University announced on Apr. 1 the creation of a shooting sports program, with club activities beginning this spring and varsity competition set to start in the Fall Semester of 2026. The university said practices and competitions will take place at a dedicated shooting range near Mayville.

The introduction of this program aims to give students an opportunity to continue participating in shooting sports during their college years. Mayville State President Dr. Brian Van Horn said, “Shooting sports continue to grow in popularity across the region and the nation, particularly among high school students. By adding this program, Mayville State is creating a pathway for students who wish to continue participating in a sport they’ve enjoyed for years, while strengthening their sense of belonging on campus. For many students who competed in trap, skeet, or other shooting disciplines during high school, the new program offers an opportunity to remain actively involved while pursuing their college education, and I don’t know a better coach/ambassador than Tom, and his wife, Cheryll, to grow this sport.”

Tom Moen has been named head coach for the new program. Moen is described as having both expertise and passion for shooting sports as well as familiarity with Mayville State from his previous employment there.

Athletic Director Larson said, “I’m excited to see something new and meaningful offered for students. This program gives students a chance to compete, improve their skills and be part of a team, while enjoying a sport that will be with them for a lifetime. Tom Moen will be an excellent mentor and coach for our students as he works to get this program established and growing.”

Mayville State University nurtures an inclusive setting that encourages intellectual exploration and diversity appreciation according to the official website. The university belongs to the North Dakota University System according to its official website.

Mayville State seeks excellence through engaging learning environments according to its official website, builds partnerships with schools and communities to support economic growth, holds accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission along with specialized recognitions for its programs, and offers undergraduate degrees as well as certificates featuring hands-on experiences according to its official website.
